Townsville Photo Spots
There are a number of great photography locations in this area, these are just a handful of my favourites.
From the Rambutan it should take 45 minutes to an hour to get to the top of this small yet well positioned summit. Follow the 'Goat Track' to the top then take your pick of location once you're up there.
The climb itself is pretty straight forward, it's a little steep in places but any able bodied person with semi-reasonable fitness will get up there just fine.
Rambutan Townsville YHA
The pool alone provides adequate photo opportunity and the view across town from the roof isn't bad either. I've written a little bit more about this hostel here - if you're staying in TSV this is definitely the place to base yourself.
Magnetic Island Photo Spots
Magnetic Island Forts
The forts on Magnetic Island can be found 5-10 minutes drive East from the ferry terminal and are at the end of 20-30 minute hike. They provide an interesting foreground, set high above the coastline.
Wild Koala's on Magnetic Island
There are a few hundred wild koala's scattered around Magnetic Island and it's a matter of luck whether you see one or not. That said you'll be in with a good chance if you head towards the forts. I saw three along the walk and I know of plenty of other visitors that have seen them here to.
Hiking On Magnetic Island
Theres a number of different hikes you can do on the island, all providing a similar style of photo opportunity.
The island is covered in huge boulders that protrude from the greenery. You can climb onto most of them if you're careful.
Hire A Barbie Car/Jeep On Magnetic Island
Something I'd say about 90% of travellers do on the Island, there's a number of hire companies and your accomodation provider should be able to put you in touch with them. Cruise around the island and take selfies to your hearts content!
Magnetic Island Beaches
Last but not least, there are some stunning beaches dotted all around the Island. Arthur Bay, Radical Bay, and West Point were my personal favourites. The Magnetic Island crocodile is said to be somewhere near West Point so I wouldn't advise swimming there, there's also jellyfish to worry about to. The other beaches mentioned are on the East of the island and you can swim at both of them. Radical bay also has some cliff jumping opportunities.
